HORSTAD ESTATE
|
The Åbjora River system is some 45 kilometres (25 miles) long in total. Salmon run its full length to the Åbjøra Lake, passing through a couple of salmon ladders.
Its main fishing areas are to be found in the first 20 kilometres. Here, in the lower part, from the mouth to the waterfalls at the Horstad Estate, the river flow is gentle with plenty of good wading. In the middle part of the river are a number of long pools combined with some rapids – and good wading. The upper part of the river runs through a magnificent canyon, with deep holding pools and offers some magnificent fly-fishing stretches too.
These upper stretches are only suitable for the more adventurous angler, since access to some areas is difficult. Just south of the Arctic Circle, the Åbjora River and the Horstad Estate are located in the small municipality of Bindal in the county of Nordland.
Without doubt, this is one the most unspoilt parts of Norway. With few inhabitants and vast expanses of land, it is blessed with some of the country’s most breathtaking scenery and rich in fauna and flora. Elk, foxes, capercaillie, black grouse and ptarmigan are frequently sighted and even brown bear have been seen. Lynx and wolverine can be found to the east of the area.

Accomodation
The Horstad Estate originates from 1622, when the first settlers arrived in the area and it has been in the Fred. Olsen family since 1958. The famous Arctic explorer, Otto Sverdrup was born on the estate in 1854. It is a working estate, mainly cattle and beef production. The estate buildings have been carefully restored, maintaining it’s original and historical style, making it an exclusive place for any guest or parties.
The Horstad Estate is offering its guests an exclusive setting and arrangement, high standard accommodation, full board, friendly and welcoming hospitality, wholesome and good food based on local produce.

Fishing
With more than 15 kilometres (10 miles) of double bank fishing, the Horstad Estate offers a unique opportunity to combine salmon and sea trout fishing. Fishing starts on 1st June and during the first few weeks the main activity takes place on the lower stretches below the Horstad falls (The Home pool). When the water temperature is right, the salmon start running these falls and the middle stretches of the river become very inviting.
The Horstad Estate’s stretches are normally fished by 6 to 8 rods per week and the 2005 catches comprised 132 salmon and grilse, based on an average of 4 rods per week over a 6 weeks period. Average salmon size is 2,5 kilos (6.0lb) and the largest salmon 10.2 kilos (22lb). The total number of sea trout caught on the whole river in 2005 was 1,887 with an average of 1.0 kilo.
In addition to salmon and sea trout fishing in the river, there are opportunities to fish for arctic char and brown trout in both the river and a number of local lakes. There are normally two guides per group of 6 anglers, but extra guides are usually available on request
