‘Top of the World’ – both geographically and in fishing terms
The Arctic Challenge
(Arctic Norway)
The landscape of Arctic Norway is incredibly varied from jagged alpine peaks, birch covered hillsides and vast rolling plateaus. The land is a mix of rivers, lakes and waterfalls, wide valleys, extensive forests and mighty mountain plains. The fjords penetrate their way into the land and their waters appear dark and grey in bad weather but mild and blue in calm weather.
The contrasts in this Central region of Norway are impressive - from the open coastal plains to the mountains with their high and snowy peaks. Long valleys that lead to open land stretching to the wide Trondheim fjord divide the region. Fir and pine covered hillsides lead down to rolling fields and well-tended farms with impressive farm buildings. With its fertile soil and pleasant climate, the region has been known for generations as Norway’s food store.
Along this coastline there are hundreds of rivers for salmon and sea-trout fishing. Some are famous rivers like Vosso, Lærdal and Stryn while others, less well known, still provide salmon surprises when anglers place a line and a fly in the current.
