With more than 450 productive salmon rivers, Norway is the foremost spawning ground for Atlantic wild salmon (salmo salar) in the World. It is estimated that around 50 per cent of the total present Atlantic Salmon stocks are running the Norwegian rivers every year and around 200.000 salmon is reported caught by anglers visiting Norwegian rivers every season. A good number of fish are caught in the 15 to 20 kilogram range.

Norway offers a unique fishing paradise for any angler.

The salmon season in Norway normally runs from June 1st till August 31st with some variations due to regional and local conditions, i.e. from May 15th till September 30th. The main salmon runs are normally from mid-summer (June 20th till July 20th) although the big salmon arrive in late May and early June. Good grilse runs take place in July. Fishing in August can also be very rewarding as salmon start settling down to spawn and good numbers of big cock salmon also arrive in August.

You are free to catch-and-release or to keep your catches although there are bag limits on most rivers. If you prefer keeping your catches, arrangement is normally made for you to bring your fish home, either frozen, smoked or cured in the special Norwegian way. Fly-fishing is gradually becoming the major sport in most Norwegian rivers, but other types of fishing are still common. In addition to fly fishing, spinning is quite normal and sensible too when the river conditions demands it.
