STORSTUU WINSNES

The Gaula River, now regarded as the best sport fishing salmon river in Europe.
The Gaula River is a part of the huge Trondheimfjord basin and is among approximately 20 rivers that will benefit hugely from the buy-out for bagnet-fishing in the Trondheim fjord. Indications from the 2005 season show higher average weight and a marked turnaround of river-caught salmon compared with net-caught on a ration of 2:1 in 2005 compared with 1:2 in 2004.

The Gaula River is well known for its big salmon in addition to large quantities of medium size salmon and grilse – averaging around 8,000 salmon during the three months season (June till end of August). The average weight is around 4.5 kilos per fish. Throughout the whole season there is always the chance to catch the big one. Every year there are a good number of fish caught in the 18 to 20 kilos (40–45 lb) category.

Accomodation
The Storstuu Winsnes Gjestegård is a family-run guesthouse. The atmosphere is very relaxed and both food and service are excellent.
It is located just 300 metres or so from the river, between the village of Støren and the town of Røros. Set in beautiful surroundings, it overlooks majestic hillsides where moose, deer and other animals roam. There is also an abundance of game birds and birds of prey. In addition to salmon fishing, shooting and hunting form an important part of the guesthouse's tradition.

Storstuu Winsnes Gjestegård has long been regarded as a place where guests enjoy their stay and can experience challenging fishing for big salmon or simply relax amid the beautiful and restful surroundings.

Fishing
Gaula Salmon has the joint fishing rights on the Malum/Winsnes beat(s) and a number of additional beats in co-operation with Gaula Flyfishing Friends. The Gaula Salmon rods will participate in a rotating fishing system with a total of 16 rods, being offered 8 large/long pools and 6 hours fishing on each pool. The beat is based 10- 20 kilometres up river from the village of Støren and approx. 50-60 kilometres from the sea. The Gaula Salmon beats are among the best on the Gaula with approximately 250 to 350 good size salmon per season.

The average weight around is 5-6 kilos per salmon. There are exceptions, as in the 2005 when the fishing started very late due to extreme high water conditions at the Gaulfoss further down the river.
