VUKU SALMON FISHING

Verdal River, with its tributaries Inna and Helgåa, is regarded as an underrated river among knowledgeable anglers in Norway.
Verdal River offers around 30 kilometres of quality fishing and bears many similarities with rivers in Scotland. The river is a part of the huge Trondheim-fjord basin and is among the approx. 20 rivers that will benefit hugely from the buy-out for bag-net-fishing in the Trondheim fjord and nearby coastal areas. Indications from the 2005 season show higher average weight, a marked turnaround of rivercaught salmon compared with net-caught on a ratio of 2:1 in 2005 compared with 1:2 in 2004.

The Verdal River, like most rivers in the Central Norway region, is known for its big salmon and usually a good number of 12-16 kilos (25-35 lb) salmon are caught during the short season. June is normally the right time to tangle with the BIG ones - coming fresh in from the Trondheim fjord. There are normally good runs of medium size salmon and grilse during July and well into August. During the last decade, good river management by fishing-right owners and the local Angling association has been vital in maintaining acceptable stocks of salmon and the river features among the 12 - 15 best rivers in Norway.

Accomodation

Holmen Estate

During the first three weeks of July, Holmen Estate provides a full
board accommodation package. This is in high quality accommodation overlooking
the Home pool on the Inna tributary.

“Lakseloftet”

The Tingvoll/Kveldstad’s “Lakseloftet”
(‘the Salmon loft’) is a refurnished barn.

Austnes Farm

The accommodation at the Austnes Farm (Østnes) is a farmhouse, typical
for the region, and guests use the ‘old folks flat’ (kåret) where full board
is provided.

Fishing
Vuku Salmon Fishing is a co-operation between three good beats around the Vuku village. The total length is 16 kilometres of double bank fishing and guests staying at the Holmen Estate, Tingvoll/ Kveldstad Farm, Austnes Farm and Austnes Lodges have the opportunity to fish any of these beats during one week fishing. During a normal season, the total catches of these three beats are in the region of 350 - 400 salmon and the average weight is around 4.5 kilos.

The upper beats, just below the Granfoss Falls have a number of excellent fly-fishing stretches combined with good holding pools. In particular, the Fossa pool at Austnes, just below the Vuku Bridge, and Tingvoll’s Home pool both hold good numbers of fish early in the season. During the middle and later part of the season, there are good chances for salmon on all three beats. Due to the diversity and length of the combined beats 18 rods are allowed to fish during the first 6 weeks of the season.
